A bank holiday in India is an officially gazetted day when all scheduled commercial banks stay shut, as mandated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) or your state government. There are two flavours: national holidays that apply everywhere, and state-specific holidays that vary by region and occasionally by whichever local deity has a birthday that week.

National Bank Holidays in India 2026

Three non-negotiable national bank holidays every year. Republic Day (January 26) commemorates the Indian Constitution coming into force in 1950. Independence Day (August 15) marks the end of British colonial rule and the start of everyone watching the parade on DD National. Gandhi Jayanti (October 2) honours the Mahatma's birthday. All banks. All states. No exceptions.

Bank Holidays by City: Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore

Mumbai and Maharashtra observe Gudi Padwa, Maharashtra Day (May 1), and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti (April 14). Delhi follows central government holidays plus a few of its own. Bangalore (Karnataka) goes hard on Kannada Rajyotsava (November 1). Chennai (Tamil Nadu) has Tamil New Year and Pongal. Hyderabad observes Telangana Formation Day. Second and Fourth Saturday Rule

Indian banks close on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month, plus all Sundays and all gazetted holidays. The RBI introduced this policy and it covers all scheduled commercial banks. Some private sector banks have slightly different arrangements but most follow it. When in doubt, check here first.
